Abstract

The COVID pandemic has reinforced the reality that a healthcare system is only as strong as its primary care sector with its four key pillars of first contact, comprehensive, coordinated and continuous. At the same time, primary care must be integrated with the wider healthcare system and beyond, adopting a broader whole of society multisectoral approach with empowered populations to develop a robust primary healthcare system. Primary healthcare however faces key challenges such as workforce development and resource constraints even as it seeks to address the medical, social and wider determinants of health. Digital health offers opportunities to transform primary healthcare to fulfil its goal of providing inclusive, equitable and cost-effective person focussed care. Achieving this requires mindset shifts, changes in care models and transitioning from programmes to movements.

Improving Healthspan: Context, Coherence, Community

The world has, in general, seen a steady increase in life expectancy albeit more slowly in recent years. A significant number of these years are unfortunately spent in ill health and the gap between health-span and life-span has persisted even in countries with the longest health-spans. Improving health-span will require three concurrent thrusts: Context, Coherence and Community, which will be examined in 3 interactive discussion sessions.
