[Seminar] Navigating Data Science and Health Technology Revolution: Balancing Innovation Gaps and Equity Opportunities in Primary Health Care

9 June 2026, 11:00am – 12:15pm @ Seminar Room 5, 6/F, 3 Sassoon Road

Speaker

Dr Hiromasa Okayasu, Director of Data, Strategy & Innovation, WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific

This session will draw on WHO’s perspective in advancing the use of data science and artificial intelligence (AI) to transform health care and public health. Across the Asia-Pacific, digital health and AI are already helping address critical system bottlenecks—from expanding access to diagnostics in remote areas to strengthening surveillance, prevention, and early screening for conditions such as tuberculosis and diabetic retinopathy. At the same time, these innovations carry risks, including widening inequities if access, data representativeness, and governance are not adequately addressed. Building on WHO’s regional and global experience, the session will explore how countries can navigate this transition—adopting a balanced, risk-informed approach that enables innovation while safeguarding equity, trust, and people-centred care.
